Mordred, and the crowdfund!

mordredbanner11
"Mordred" is an Arthurian drama, the pet project of our founder, Laura. This dark, gritty drama is inspired by early legends of King Arthur, and set in the early 6th Century, a grim time after the Roman departure from Britain, and during the Saxon invasions. You will not see the types of setting that people expect when you say "King Arthur" here - there are no luxurious 13th/ 14th century castles, damsels in pseudo-Tudor velvet gowns, jousts and knights in plumed helmets. This is set a good 700 years or so earlier, when early Celtic writings point to whatever happened to inspire the legends, actually took place.
Being filmed across Devon and Cornwall in 2016,and performed as a stage show as well, Mordred tells the story from the point of view of King Arthurs son.
Some roles have already been cast, while others will be cast in Feburary. This is our first film to be shot on Red 4K.

A few weeks ago, some of our members, along with our Director of Photography, got together, and filmed a concept trailer.

This is also the first project that we are crowdfunding. We are not relying on the crowdfunding, and are also using ebay, exhibitions, talks and other sources of funding the film. However, if you would like to support the project, our Indiegogo crowdfunding link is here: http://igg.me/at/mordred1/x/12578926

Les Miserables has been a bit on hold, but is going ahead. The director, Ric Vince, has been working himself to a frazzle on board the Golden Hind Museum Ship, six days a week, as the notorious "Cap'n Blackheart" , and without Ric, one of the originators of the project, the rest of the team have been waiting for the tourist season to finish, before further action can be taken on the series. It may be moving slower, but is most definitely still happening, so keep your eyes peeled for news coming up as soon as the team meetings begin again!

Looking for speakers for local organisations? MordredFundraiseTalk
We are fundraising for our coming productions - and if this takes off, we will continue to do it - Laura is our main speaker, and depending on the request and availability, we may be able to bring other members in as well. This is family friendly, although because of the subject matter, we recommend that it is of more interest to teens and adults, than small children.
This is very much a case of "donate what you can", if you would like Laura to come and give a talk.

The release of our Les Miserables 20 hour series trailer, and video of  our film & TV convention panel discussion

We have been away for a couple of days, as well as preparing beforehand, for this event. Over the past weekend we have been representing the series at the Optimus film and TV convention in Torquay, where we were honored to be given a half hour slot in between Game of Thrones, and Ghostbusters, which also marked the release of our trailer for the series!

Hunger Games fanfilm trailer, filmed in Brixham & Paignton set in an alternate universe.

A practice project by some of our members and friends.

In this alternate universe, Katniss's rebellion failed, and this film tells the story of the brutal Fourth Quarter-Quell, where each district has had to offer 12 tributes, who fight in regional "Games", before the survivors are made to fight to the end in the "finals".

-Who will win?

-Who were these "finalists"

-And do the games unfold as the Gamemakers planned?

This has been a sideline project by some of our members, to create a half-hour Hunger Games fanfilm. While obviously money cannot be made from a fanfilm, it did allow for many important possibilities for our members. Many of them are signed to, or hoping to sign to, our casting agency, and wanted to expand their showreels beyond our usual norm of historical drama. It also allowed us to explore new techniques for filming and for our members to practice their film-making skills.

The trailer is complete, with the full film being edited now.

We had a fantastic weekend filming for the trailer in Dartmouth and Plymouth for scenes with Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Marius and Cosette. Despite the very early morning starts that come with filming, and the fact we were filming in two towns, we had a fantastic time, supported by amazing local actors, and crew members. It is so exciting to see the series trailer coming together bit by bit, supported by an amazing cast. :) The next shoot is next Saturday, in Brixham Museum, and in Stoke Fleming.

Meantime, our producer grabbed some photos behind the scenes!

EDIT - And we have started a behind-the-scenes youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjNo_NJXQ6Nmj4Xq1ZjPl6y1TTy2eI7xF

(dont forget we are looking for supporting cast for the full series which commences filming around Devon and Cornwall at the end of the summer)

More photos behind the scenes.  )

Survivors of the Titanic
(stage show)

In 1912, many survivors from the Titanic disaster, were brought to Plymouth. This drama, written directly from historical sources, will be performed in Torbay (and possibly Plymouth).

In answer to a commonly asked question, this has nothing to do with the Titanic film starring Leo Dicaprio!

Auditions Sunday Feb 8th 2015

As with the majority of our main shows we perform at the Palace Theatre in Paignton, and are looking at expanding to Brixham theatre and maybe one or two others in the coming year.

This summer and autumn quite a few things have come out of that, such as filming for Channel 5, being visited by the Britain's Got Talent scouts, performing in an international opera, etc. In the past we have also worked with the BBC, Disney, Smithsonian, ITV, and Sky TV. All costumes and scripts are provided each show, we are a range of people from those new to acting, through to semi-professional, and trained performers, everyone works together to produce a good show, and a pleasant supportive team. We strongly discourage "cliques" and forbid bullying and elitism, so that it is a friendly, respectful, safe, and energetic environment for everyone.

A note from Laura (producer)

Ric and I are still sorting precise castings for the people who came to Les Mis auditions at the Theatre Royals TR2 studios. However, we are definite that the above male roles still need to be filled as we didn't find the ideal fit.

If you have already auditioned, then you do not need to attend this audition.
____________________________________________

Overall, this is a three year project, with filming taking place for each crowdfunded episode, over a few days, after funding has been raised. During filming days, shoots could be an early start to late finish, and for relevant characters also include night-time shoots. A lot of locations will be in and around Devon and Cornwall in the UK, some locations in France, especially for later episodes, will be looked into as well.

This is a pretty different project, as it is based on Victor Hugo's UNABRIDGED novel (this is not the musical or a single feature film!) and we are remaining as faithful to that unabridged novel as is possible.

Due to the nature of crowdfunding we are hoping to be able to pay our performers, but this depends entirely on funds raised, and may alter episode by episode as the series gets more well known, but at the minimum, once you have been cast as a character in the series, your expenses will be covered.

Depending on what character you wish to audition for, and are cast as you may be required for several episodes (or indeed all of them), or simply one.

HOW TO AUDITION:

Please contact us with a photograph, and a few words about the kind of role you are looking for. We will send you an audition pack and audition pieces suitable for your appearance. Please note that you do not need to learn the parts, just familiarise yourself with them.

At the auditions, you will be asked to perform the piece on video camera, as a screen test. We will be looking at your characterization, focus, and the realism of your portrayal of the character. We also will be looking at how you take direction, and interact with other people.

There are several child roles, but all children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Please be aware that we cannot accept auditions or applications via email or video. In order to be considered for a role, you need to attend in person.

THERE IS NO FEE REQUIRED FOR YOU TO AUDITION OR BE INVOLVED IN ANY WAY, THIS IS A GENUINE PROJECT NOT A SCAM.

POSSIBLE BEGINNERS ACTING CLASSES

I have had a few people recently contact The South Devon Players theatre company, Brixham and ask about basic acting classes for adults (age 16 to the Skys-The-Limit), rather than learning by being involved in an actual show.

I am considering therefore, running a short course like this, one early evening per week, after Xmas, of one and a half hours, at the community centre where we usually rehearse, it would cost £4 per person per session.

If you would like to express interest, you do not need to be an existing theatre company member, but please email southdevonplayers@gmail.com, with "acting class" in the subject line.

This is so that I can gauge how many people would be interested, before I go ahead and set things in motion if I have enough people interested. (I apologise but this proposed course would not be ideal for children or people with specialist needs)

I would be running the course, I am trained to Masters level, with a Masters In Education, specifically in teaching performing arts in further and community education, via the University of Exeter.

All profits from the classes would go back into the theatre group.

London sponsor backs Brixham theatre group’s epic stage production of Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean  for a further performance at the Palace Theatre, Paignton, on November 16th 2013.

In September, the South Devon Players, an award-winning amateur theatre group from Brixham, performed their own production, of Les Miserables, as a three hour full-scale non-musical stage drama written directly from Victor Hugo’s novel.

This production was very well received by audiences, with standing ovations, comments such as “flawless”, “spellbinding”, “awesome” being commonplace, and one couple on holiday from Taunton, stating that they felt the production of be of a higher standard than a professional production of The Tempest which they had recently seen in Stratford Upon Avon.

Also present, was a professional photographer and film maker from London, who was so impressed by the production, in his words “spell-binding”, that he is now sponsoring the South Devon Players to be able to go where they could not afford before, into the Palace Theatre, Paignton, for a final performance of this show, at a low ticket price, as he believes that the show should be seen more widely, and that the South Devon Players in future should be able to afford to perform in larger theatres 2014.

The tickets are now available from the Palace Theatre box office (Tel 01803 665800) priced at £3 each.

Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean is a dramatic new 3 hour show based directly on Victor Hugo's novel. Suitable for the whole family, this brings this classic tale of love, redemption and revolution to life in a thrilling new production written by our secretary, Laura J, and premiering with the South Devon Players.

This is a huge production, the biggest by far that we have ever undertaken, it has attracted positive interest & compliments from Hollywood celebrities, and the original show “run”press release is featured on one of the biggest Broadway websites in their "international" section. An international theatrical script agent is also currently looking into making the script available to other theatre companies.

All in all, a show not to be missed!

The South Devon Players are an award winning, small, family-friendly, completely non-profit, community theatre / amateur dramatic group based in the beautiful fishing port of Brixham; Devon (in South West England) and we perform theatre shows around Torbay, and South Devon, based on historical events, usually local history & legends although we sometimes do also cover wider historical events.

Founded in 2005 with the proceeds of a car-boot sale, then winning the Torbay Together Arts In The Community Award in 2010, and appearing on BBC1 national television in 2012-2013, the majority of our shows and projects are about local history and mythology of the South West, and are written by local authors. It is part of our ethos to promote the history of Brixham, Torbay and South Devon. We sometimes deviate to perform plays based on famous classical stories or other wider historical events, but our main focus is, and will always be, the history of the Southwest.

We consider it a vital part of our raison d’etre to be able to keep ticket prices affordable for everyone, and bring theatrical experience to a wider audience. We also do our best, where possible, to support other local non-profit events or entertainment groups working within the community

A few things since we updated the news page last: first of all, the South Devon Players are now affiliated with NODA (the National Operatic & Dramatic Association).

From September onwards, we are also moving to two rehearsals per week, the main rehearsal remains on the Wednesday evenings, but we will also be introducing "odds and ends" or special "certain scenes only" rehearsals on Sunday afternoons. This means that not everyone needs to be there every Sunday, but it will allow for extra rehearsals and smoothing of the rought bits.

Les Miserables rehearsals are really underway superbly, and we will be producing the show posters within the next month, with in-character/ on location photos of our cast.

Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean has been successfully cast with a superb mix of old and new members, rehearsals begin next week. With the shows all booked now, and a photoshoot for the posters and promo photos next month with both our in-house photographers, and photographers from the Aesthetic Clarity Ltd model agency, and an impressive array of publicity events, along with a Hollywood A-lister following the project, this is indeed heading towards being a huge project!
We are still open to some more men joining the show (up to 4), for smaller roles.

Les Miserables Reminder! : The South Devon Players theatre company, Brixham are holding open auditions for an exciting and challenging new amateur theatre production in Torbay - a new non-musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic story. All seriously interested people are welcome to audition, there are large and small roles to be cast.

Les Miserables; The Memoirs of Jean Valjean is a new non-musical theatre show, based directly on Victor Hugo’s thrilling novel of redemption, love and revolution, set in 19th Century France. The South Devon Players are performing this show in September 2013 around Torbay, and have announced open auditions for the production. Whether you are ten or eighty, there are large and small roles available and the auditions are open to both members and new people as well.

People new to acting and performing are welcome.

All we ask is that if you are aged under 16 (there are three child roles), that you are accompanied by a parent or guardian, and that all performers are reliable; able to rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and available for the shows, in September.

The auditions will take the form of script readings on Wednesday May 15th 2013, at 7pm, at  Chestnut Heights Community Centre, Poplar Close, Brixham TQ5 0SA. Rehearsals commencing the following Wednesday (same time/ venue).

As well as performers, we are also looking for front of house helpers, and set/ stage hands too, so if you do not feel like performing, there are plenty of other ways to get involved in the show.

Please note that Act 2 of the show is likely to contain strobe or light flashes.

The South Devon Players theatre company are an award-winning, completely non-profit community/ amateur theatre company founded in 2005, based in Brixham and featured on BBC 1 national television in January 2013. We mainly specialise in shows about local history, but sometimes expand to wider historical events (as in the case of this production) as well. We are family friendly, lively and welcoming to all who wish to be involved in theatre at any level. In the past, members have gone on to perform in major feature films, and train at RADA. Our membership ranges from age 10 to 65, and from professional performers to complete beginners, all of whom work as part of a team to create new exciting shows which are then brought to our local community.

Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean will be directed by one of the theatre company’s founders; Miss Laura J, who as well as being a professional performer and model in her own right, also holds a Masters degree in teaching performing arts, as well as degrees in film production, and photography – and has performed in another production of Les Miserables in the past, elsewhere. She is accompanied by Mrs Louise German, as assistant director.  Louise is the other co-founder of the South Devon Players, who has decades of community and amateur theatre experience in her own right. Both are experienced directors, and looking forward to joining you to create the biggest show the South Devon Players have yet produced.
